Background of the Study
In Maiduguri, Hausa is more than just a means of communication—it is a carrier of cultural heritage, especially among community elders. These elders are seen as custodians of traditional language practices, employing elaborate pragmatic markers such as indirect speech, honorifics, and culturally specific expressions to convey respect and maintain social order (Abubakar, 2023). Age significantly influences these pragmatic practices; older speakers use language in a manner steeped in tradition, ensuring that interactions reinforce community values and social hierarchies. As global and urban influences increase, however, there is a risk that these age-specific pragmatic features may be eroded. This study explores how age affects pragmatic language use among Hausa community elders in Maiduguri by documenting traditional linguistic patterns and examining potential changes resulting from modernization. By analyzing recorded conversations and conducting structured interviews, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of age in preserving effective and culturally resonant communication.

Statement of the Problem
Community elders in Maiduguri, responsible for upholding traditional Hausa language practices, face diminishing opportunities to transmit their pragmatic linguistic heritage amid modernization (Abubakar, 2023). As younger generations are increasingly influenced by global communication trends, the culturally rich, age-specific pragmatic markers used by elders risk being underutilized or lost. This trend poses a threat to the preservation of traditional language forms and social cohesion within the community. Limited empirical research on how age influences pragmatic language use among Hausa elders underscores the need for a systematic investigation to ensure that these valuable communication strategies are maintained.

Objectives of the Study

  • To document traditional pragmatic features used by Hausa community elders.

  • To analyze the influence of age on these pragmatic practices.

  • To propose strategies for preserving age-specific language features.

Research Questions

  • How does age influence pragmatic language use among Hausa elders?

  • What traditional markers are predominantly used by older speakers?

  • How can these practices be preserved amid modern influences?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the influence of age on pragmatic language use in Hausa among community elders in Maiduguri. The findings will contribute to preserving cultural communication practices and inform educators and policymakers on strategies to support traditional linguistic heritage (Abubakar, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Hausa pragmatic language use among community elders in Maiduguri and does not include younger speakers or other regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pragmatic Language Use: The effective use of language in social contexts.

  • Hausa: A major indigenous language of Northern Nigeria.

  • Community Elders: Senior members who preserve traditional cultural practices.
