Background of the Study
Technological advancements have revolutionized remote work, reshaping communication practices across various sectors. Nigerian Pidgin, a flexible and adaptive creole, is widely used by remote workers to facilitate digital communication. Pragmatic communication—encompassing indirectness, humor, and culturally specific discourse markers—is essential in ensuring effective online interactions (Ibrahim, 2023). As remote work platforms and digital collaboration tools become increasingly prevalent, Nigerian Pidgin speakers must navigate new communicative environments where traditional pragmatic markers are often modified by technological constraints. These advancements may foster the creation of new linguistic forms, while also challenging conventional norms of politeness and indirectness. This study examines how technological advancements impact pragmatic communication in Nigerian Pidgin among remote workers, analyzing digital correspondence, virtual meetings, and online forums. The aim is to understand how technology influences language use and to assess whether these changes enhance or hinder effective communication in a remote work context (Eze, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Technological advancements in remote work environments are altering traditional pragmatic communication in Nigerian Pidgin, potentially leading to reduced clarity and cultural nuance (Ibrahim, 2023). The adaptation to digital communication tools may result in the loss or transformation of established pragmatic markers, causing misunderstandings and inefficiencies among remote workers (Eze, 2024). Limited research has focused on these changes, highlighting a gap in our understanding of how technology influences pragmatic language use in professional digital settings.
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the impact of technology on Nigerian Pidgin pragmatic markers.
To evaluate changes in communication practices among remote workers.
To propose strategies for preserving effective pragmatic communication.
Research Questions
How have technological advancements modified pragmatic communication in Nigerian Pidgin?
What challenges do remote workers face in digital discourse?
What measures can enhance pragmatic clarity in virtual environments?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the effect of technological advancements on pragmatic communication in Nigerian Pidgin among remote workers. The findings will inform digital communication strategies, benefiting remote workers, educators, and linguists by suggesting methods to preserve cultural nuances in professional digital interactions (Ibrahim, 2023; Eze, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to remote work communication in Nigerian Pidgin and does not include offline interactions.
