Background of the Study
Kano markets are vibrant hubs of commerce where Hausa language serves as the primary medium of interaction among traders. Conversational dynamics in this setting are characterized by a blend of formal and informal language registers, rapid exchanges, and culturally rooted pragmatic strategies that facilitate negotiation and relationship building (Musa, 2023). Traders employ various conversational techniques—such as indirect requests, honorific greetings, and strategic pauses—to manage negotiations and maintain social order. These dynamics are essential for ensuring smooth transactions and fostering a sense of community in bustling market environments. However, the increasing influence of modern communication methods and external business practices is reshaping these traditional dynamics, potentially altering the effectiveness of established conversational norms (Suleiman, 2024). This study appraises the conversational dynamics in Hausa among Kano traders by analyzing market interactions through recordings and observational studies. It seeks to identify key patterns, challenges, and adaptive strategies that maintain effective communication in the context of rapid economic and social change.

Statement of the Problem
Traditional conversational dynamics among Hausa traders in Kano markets are being challenged by modern influences, which may disrupt established communication practices (Musa, 2023). The infusion of new business terminologies and the fast pace of market transactions can lead to interruptions and misunderstandings, affecting negotiation outcomes (Suleiman, 2024). There is limited research on how these changes impact the conversational strategies that have long supported trade and social cohesion. The study aims to address this gap by evaluating the evolving conversational dynamics and proposing measures to sustain effective communication in traditional market settings.

Objectives of the Study

  • To document traditional conversational dynamics among Hausa traders.

  • To evaluate the impact of modern influences on these dynamics.

  • To recommend strategies for sustaining effective market communication.

Research Questions

  • What are the key conversational strategies in Hausa market interactions?

  • How are these strategies affected by modern business practices?

  • What can be done to enhance communication in Kano markets?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it appraises conversational dynamics among Hausa traders in Kano markets, providing insights into maintaining effective communication in evolving commercial settings. Its findings will benefit market regulators, traders, and linguists by offering strategies to preserve traditional negotiation techniques amid modernization (Musa, 2023; Suleiman, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Hausa language interactions among traders in Kano markets and does not extend to other business sectors.

Definitions of Terms

  • Conversational Dynamics: The patterns and strategies used in managing dialogue.

  • Hausa Language: The primary language of communication in Kano markets.

  • Traders: Individuals engaged in buying and selling goods in a market setting.
