Background of the Study
Cultural identity is a powerful force that shapes political discourse, particularly in Yoruba communities in Abeokuta. In political communication, pragmatic strategies such as indirect speech, respectful address, and culturally specific rhetoric are employed to project legitimacy and connect with constituents (Suleiman, 2023). Yoruba political discourse often reflects a deep sense of cultural pride and historical continuity, with speakers drawing on proverbs, traditional honorifics, and ritualized language to navigate complex social hierarchies. These strategies not only serve to persuade and mobilize audiences but also reinforce communal values and social cohesion. However, the growing influence of global communication styles and modern political rhetoric is challenging traditional pragmatic practices, potentially diluting cultural signals and affecting voter perception (Olu, 2024). This study examines how cultural identity influences the pragmatic strategies adopted by Yoruba political figures in Abeokuta, assessing the balance between tradition and modernity in political speech. Through discourse analysis of speeches, interviews with political actors, and audience surveys, the research aims to uncover the mechanisms by which cultural identity is maintained and communicated in the political arena.

Statement of the Problem
Traditional pragmatic strategies in Yoruba political discourse are increasingly under pressure from modern, globalized communication styles, which may weaken the cultural markers essential for authentic identity expression (Suleiman, 2023). As politicians adopt more direct and less context-specific rhetoric, the nuanced signals of cultural identity risk being lost, potentially diminishing voter trust and cultural continuity (Olu, 2024). There is limited research on how these shifts affect the overall effectiveness of political communication, creating a gap in our understanding of the interplay between cultural identity and pragmatic language use in political contexts.

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the influence of cultural identity on Yoruba political discourse.

  • To evaluate the impact of modern influences on traditional pragmatic strategies.

  • To propose measures for preserving culturally rooted political communication.

Research Questions

  • How is cultural identity expressed through pragmatic strategies in Yoruba political discourse?

  • What modern influences are altering these strategies?

  • What can be done to preserve traditional cultural markers in political speech?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of cultural identity on pragmatic strategies in Yoruba political discourse in Abeokuta, offering valuable insights for political communicators, cultural scholars, and policymakers. The findings will contribute to efforts to sustain authentic political expression amid globalization (Suleiman, 2023; Olu, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to political discourse in Abeokuta and does not extend to other regions or informal political communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Cultural Identity: The shared values and traditions that define a community.

  • Pragmatic Strategies: Techniques used to manage social meaning in language.
