Background of the Study
In Maiduguri, the Hausa language functions within a complex social fabric where context plays a pivotal role in shaping pragmatic interpretations. Speakers rely heavily on situational cues—such as the setting, the relationship between interlocutors, and nonverbal signals—to convey meaning beyond the literal words (Abubakar, 2023). In everyday interactions, contextual information guides listeners to interpret indirect requests, humor, and politeness strategies effectively. For instance, greetings and requests in formal gatherings are imbued with culturally specific markers that ensure mutual respect and clarity. However, in more informal settings, the reliance on context intensifies, as speakers frequently use idiomatic expressions and implicit cues that require a shared cultural background. This dynamic interplay between language and context underscores the importance of pragmatic competence, as misinterpretation may lead to social discord or miscommunication. Despite the centrality of context in Hausa communication, rapid social changes and urban influences in Maiduguri have begun to challenge traditional practices. Modern media and interregional interactions introduce new communicative norms, potentially diluting the contextual cues that once ensured clear pragmatic interpretation (Bello, 2024). This study aims to assess how contextual factors continue to shape meaning in Hausa discourse and to identify shifts in these processes due to modernization, thereby contributing to our understanding of language adaptation in evolving social landscapes.

Statement of the Problem
Traditional reliance on contextual cues in Hausa communication is under pressure in Maiduguri due to increasing urbanization and exposure to global communication styles. This shift may compromise the clarity of pragmatic interpretations, as speakers might misinterpret or overlook subtle situational markers (Abubakar, 2023). There is limited research on how these evolving contexts influence meaning-making in Hausa, resulting in a gap in our understanding of pragmatic adaptation. The challenge lies in balancing traditional context-dependent interpretations with modern linguistic influences, which could lead to ambiguities and reduced communicative effectiveness (Bello, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the role of context in shaping pragmatic interpretations in Hausa.

  • To identify changes in contextual cues due to modernization in Maiduguri.

  • To propose strategies to sustain effective pragmatic communication.

Research Questions

  • How does context influence pragmatic interpretation in Hausa conversations?

  • What modern influences are altering these contextual cues?

  • What measures can ensure the preservation of traditional pragmatic understanding?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores how contextual factors shape pragmatic meanings in Hausa, offering insights critical for linguists, educators, and cultural policymakers. By understanding the interplay between context and language, strategies can be developed to preserve effective communication amidst rapid social changes. The findings will aid in maintaining cultural continuity and improving language education in Maiduguri (Abubakar, 2023; Bello, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing contextual influences on pragmatic interpretations in Hausa language interactions in Maiduguri. It does not address other linguistic features or regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Context: The situational environment affecting language meaning.

  • Pragmatic Interpretations: Inferred meanings beyond literal expression.
