Background of the Study
Humor plays a pivotal role in Nigerian English as used in Nollywood films, serving as a tool to engage audiences and convey complex social commentary. In Nollywood, humor is interwoven with pragmatic language use to manage interpersonal relationships, defuse tension, and reflect cultural values through subtle cues and double entendres (Eze, 2023). Filmmakers strategically deploy humorous dialogues, facial expressions, and contextual irony to enhance the narrative while maintaining a balance between entertainment and critical reflection. The pragmatic function of humor in film is influenced by the interplay of language, visual cues, and cultural references, making it a multifaceted element in Nollywood storytelling. However, as modern audiences become increasingly diverse and globalized, the traditional use of humor may be challenged by differing interpretations and evolving communication styles (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how humor is used pragmatically in Nigerian English within Nollywood films, analyzing its role in conveying implicit meanings and shaping viewer responses through a combination of discourse analysis and audience feedback.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the central role of humor in Nollywood films, its pragmatic function in Nigerian English faces challenges due to evolving language use and diverse audience interpretations (Eze, 2023). The traditional humorous cues embedded in film dialogue may lose their intended effect when confronted with modern communication trends and global cultural influences, resulting in potential misinterpretations (Ibrahim, 2024). This shift threatens the effectiveness of humor as a tool for social commentary and narrative engagement. Limited research has focused on how these pragmatic aspects of humor are adapting to contemporary changes in media, highlighting the need for a systematic evaluation.

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the pragmatic role of humor in Nollywood film dialogues.

  • To assess the impact of modern influences on humorous expressions.

  • To propose strategies for maintaining the effectiveness of humor in film.

Research Questions

  • How is humor used pragmatically in Nigerian English in Nollywood films?

  • What challenges affect its interpretation in modern contexts?

  • What measures can enhance the pragmatic function of humor?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of humor in pragmatic language use in Nollywood films, providing insights for filmmakers, linguists, and cultural critics on preserving the communicative power of humor. The findings will inform strategies to ensure that humor remains effective in conveying cultural nuances and social commentary despite modern challenges (Eze, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the pragmatic use of humor in Nigerian English within Nollywood films and does not address other film industries or languages.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pragmatic Language Use: The use of language to manage social interactions and convey implicit meanings.

  • Humor: The quality of being amusing, often used to convey messages indirectly.
