Background of the Study
Speech genre variation refers to the differences in language use that occur across distinct social events and contexts. In Kano, traditional event speakers—such as emcees at weddings, religious sermons, and community ceremonies—employ varied speech genres within the Hausa language to suit the formality, purpose, and audience of the event. Each speech genre is characterized by specific lexical choices, intonation patterns, and rhetorical devices that convey cultural values and social expectations (Musa, 2023). Traditional event speeches often include ceremonial greetings, blessings, and narrative passages that are carefully structured to maintain decorum and promote communal solidarity. However, increasing urbanization and exposure to global communication practices have introduced new speech genres and altered traditional patterns. This shift has the potential to dilute established norms and create variation in the performance of traditional speech events (Suleiman, 2024). The study investigates how speech genre variation manifests in Hausa language usage among traditional event speakers in Kano, aiming to document the distinct genres and analyze the factors driving these variations, as well as their implications for cultural continuity.
Statement of the Problem
Traditional speech genres in Hausa language events are undergoing significant variation due to modern influences and changing audience expectations in Kano. This evolution can lead to inconsistencies in the delivery of traditional event speeches, potentially undermining cultural continuity and reducing the effectiveness of ceremonial communication (Musa, 2023). As urban and global influences seep into local contexts, there is a risk that established rhetorical structures and formal language norms may be compromised (Suleiman, 2024). The lack of comprehensive studies on how these variations affect cultural transmission creates a gap in understanding the long-term impact on traditional Hausa communication practices. This study seeks to address these challenges by exploring the nature and consequences of speech genre variation.
Objectives of the Study
To document different speech genres used in traditional Hausa events.
To assess the impact of modern influences on these genres.
To propose measures to sustain traditional speech practices.
Research Questions
What are the predominant speech genres among traditional event speakers?
How do modern influences affect these genres?
What strategies can ensure the preservation of traditional formats?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of modern influences on speech genre variation in Hausa language events, providing insights into preserving cultural heritage in a changing social landscape. The findings will benefit cultural practitioners, linguists, and community leaders by offering strategies to maintain effective traditional communication while adapting to contemporary contexts (Musa, 2023; Suleiman, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to traditional event speakers in Kano and does not encompass informal or non-ceremonial speech genres.
