Background of the Study
Nonverbal cues—such as facial expressions, gestures, and body language—are essential complements to verbal communication and significantly influence pragmatic interpretation. In Igbo community gatherings in Onitsha, these cues serve as critical markers for conveying emotions, attitudes, and social intentions. Traditional Igbo communication heavily relies on nonverbal signals to supplement spoken language, thereby enhancing clarity and reinforcing cultural values (Nwankwo, 2023). During communal events, participants use a range of nonverbal behaviors to express respect, agreement, and solidarity. These behaviors, deeply rooted in cultural traditions, provide context and nuance that are often lost in purely verbal interactions. However, modern influences and urban communication styles are altering these traditional practices, potentially leading to ambiguities in meaning (Okafor, 2024). This study examines how nonverbal cues interact with verbal discourse to shape pragmatic interpretation during Igbo community gatherings in Onitsha, with a focus on understanding their role in maintaining cultural continuity and effective communication.
Statement of the Problem
Nonverbal cues are pivotal for effective communication in Igbo community gatherings in Onitsha, yet their role is being challenged by modern communication trends. As traditional nonverbal signals are increasingly influenced by contemporary styles, there is a risk that subtle cultural meanings may be obscured or misinterpreted (Nwankwo, 2023). This evolution can lead to breakdowns in communication and misunderstandings during community interactions, potentially undermining social cohesion (Okafor, 2024). Despite the acknowledged importance of nonverbal communication, there is limited research on its current use and impact in traditional Igbo settings. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the role and effectiveness of nonverbal cues in facilitating pragmatic interpretation.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining nonverbal cues in Igbo community gatherings in Onitsha and does not extend to other settings or languages.
