Background of the Study
Discourse management strategies involve techniques that speakers use to structure conversations and maintain coherence during extended communication. In Abuja, academic speakers employing Nigerian English use a variety of strategies—such as turn-taking, topic shifting, and clarification requests—to effectively manage classroom lectures, seminars, and academic debates (Ibrahim, 2023). Nigerian English, influenced by indigenous languages and global academic standards, requires speakers to balance clarity with cultural expression. Effective discourse management not only facilitates the transmission of complex ideas but also helps bridge potential gaps between speakers from diverse linguistic backgrounds. However, inconsistencies in the use of these strategies can lead to misunderstandings and impede academic progress (Adesola, 2024). This study investigates the discourse management strategies utilized by academic speakers in Abuja, aiming to identify effective practices and potential areas for improvement. By analyzing recorded academic sessions and conducting interviews with educators, the research seeks to contribute to the enhancement of academic communication in Nigerian higher education.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of effective discourse management in academic settings, Nigerian English speakers in Abuja face challenges in organizing and sustaining coherent discourse. Variability in turn-taking, topic transitions, and clarification strategies can lead to ambiguous or fragmented communication (Ibrahim, 2023). These issues are compounded by the hybrid nature of Nigerian English, which incorporates both indigenous linguistic elements and international academic norms. Limited empirical research has addressed the specific strategies employed by academic speakers, leaving a gap in understanding the factors that impact effective academic discourse (Adesola, 2024). This study aims to fill that gap by evaluating current discourse management practices and recommending methods to improve communication clarity in academic contexts.
Objectives of the Study
To identify discourse management strategies used by academic speakers in Abuja.
To assess the effectiveness of these strategies in achieving coherent communication.
To recommend improvements for optimizing academic discourse.
Research Questions
What discourse management strategies are used by academic speakers in Abuja?
How do these strategies impact the clarity and coherence of academic discourse?
What improvements can be made to enhance academic communication?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines discourse management strategies in Nigerian English among academic speakers in Abuja, offering insights into effective communication practices in higher education. Its findings will aid educators, administrators, and language planners in developing strategies that improve clarity and coherence in academic settings. Enhanced discourse management can lead to more effective teaching, better student engagement, and a higher quality of academic interaction (Ibrahim, 2023; Adesola, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to exploring discourse management strategies among academic speakers in Abuja using Nigerian English, excluding informal or non-academic contexts.
