Background of the Study
National language policies play an instrumental role in preserving indigenous languages, especially in urban centers where global languages dominate. In Calabar, the Efik language is a critical component of cultural identity. Recent national policy initiatives have sought to revitalize Efik through educational reforms, media promotion, and cultural programming. These policies aim to standardize Efik usage in schools and broadcast media, ensuring that young generations maintain fluency in their ancestral tongue (Inyang, 2023). By integrating Efik into formal curricula and public discourse, policymakers hope to counterbalance the pervasive influence of global languages. However, the effectiveness of these policies depends on their implementation, community acceptance, and alignment with traditional language practices. This study examines the effect of national language policies on Efik language revitalization in Calabar by evaluating policy outcomes, educational practices, and media content. It explores whether these interventions successfully enhance language proficiency and cultural pride among Efik speakers (Ekpo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite robust national language policies aimed at revitalizing Efik, challenges persist in achieving widespread language proficiency and cultural transmission in Calabar. Discrepancies in policy implementation, inadequate resource allocation, and resistance from segments of the community contribute to mixed outcomes. These challenges hinder the full realization of revitalization goals, leaving Efik at risk of gradual decline. This study addresses the gap by investigating the practical impact of national policies on Efik language use in educational and media settings, aiming to identify key obstacles and propose solutions to enhance policy effectiveness (Inyang, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the implementation of national language policies affecting Efik revitalization.
To assess the impact of these policies on language usage in education and media.
To recommend strategies for improving policy effectiveness.
