Background of the Study
Yoruba oral literature is a repository of rich cultural heritage, encompassing myths, folktales, proverbs, and epic narratives that have been transmitted orally for generations. Translation plays a crucial role in preserving this literature by making it accessible to wider audiences while maintaining its semantic depth and cultural nuances (Adeyemi, 2023). Through translation, the layered meanings embedded in Yoruba expressions—often steeped in symbolism and historical context—can be conveyed to non-Yoruba speakers, thus ensuring the continuity of cultural knowledge. However, the translation process presents challenges in capturing the full semantic range and contextual subtleties of the original texts. Cultural references, idiomatic expressions, and poetic devices often resist direct translation, potentially leading to a dilution of meaning (Ogun, 2024). This study investigates the strategies employed in translating Yoruba oral literature, assessing their effectiveness in preserving semantic integrity. By analyzing translated texts alongside their original versions, the research aims to identify best practices and propose improvements for future translation efforts, thereby contributing to the preservation of Yoruba cultural identity.

Statement of the Problem
The translation of Yoruba oral literature faces significant challenges in preserving the semantic richness inherent in the original texts. As translators attempt to bridge cultural and linguistic divides, key semantic elements—such as idioms, metaphors, and culturally specific symbols—are often lost or misinterpreted (Adeyemi, 2023). This loss compromises the authenticity and depth of the original narratives, undermining efforts to safeguard cultural heritage. Moreover, the absence of standardized translation methodologies further exacerbates inconsistencies in conveying meaning (Ogun, 2024). The study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the current translation practices and identifying strategies to enhance the semantic preservation of Yoruba oral literature.

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess current translation practices in Yoruba oral literature.

  • To identify challenges in preserving semantic meaning during translation.

  • To recommend strategies for improving semantic fidelity in translated texts.

Research Questions

  • How effective are current translation practices in preserving the semantic depth of Yoruba oral literature?

  • What are the major challenges faced by translators?

  • What measures can improve semantic preservation in translation?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical role of translation in preserving the semantic integrity of Yoruba oral literature. The findings will inform translators, educators, and cultural preservationists about effective strategies to maintain the richness of indigenous narratives. By identifying challenges and proposing solutions, the research contributes to safeguarding Yoruba cultural heritage and ensuring that the full spectrum of meaning is retained in translated works (Adeyemi, 2023; Ogun, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to investigating the role of translation in preserving the semantic integrity of Yoruba oral literature and does not extend to other literary forms or languages.
