Background of the Study
Language policy implementation is vital for the preservation and promotion of indigenous languages. In Cross River State, significant efforts have been made to implement policies aimed at preserving the Efik language. These initiatives include curriculum reforms, teacher training, and the incorporation of Efik in media and cultural programming (Inyang, 2023). The goal is to enhance language proficiency, increase public usage, and foster a sense of cultural identity among Efik speakers. However, despite clear policy directives, the actual implementation often faces challenges such as limited funding, resistance to change, and insufficient infrastructure. The effectiveness of these policies directly influences the sustainability of the Efik language in an era of rapid modernization. This study evaluates how Efik language policies are implemented in Cross River State by examining stakeholder perceptions, educational outcomes, and media practices. It also seeks to identify bottlenecks in policy execution and propose strategies to bridge the gap between policy formulation and practice (Ekpo, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although robust language policies exist for the Efik language, their implementation in Cross River State remains inconsistent. Challenges such as inadequate funding, limited teacher training, and infrastructural deficits hamper the effective transmission of these policies. This gap undermines efforts to strengthen Efik language proficiency and cultural identity among the population. The study aims to address these deficiencies by investigating the practical aspects of policy implementation and its impact on language preservation (Inyang, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the current implementation of Efik language policies in Cross River State.

  2. To identify challenges that impede effective policy execution.

  3. To recommend improvements for enhanced policy implementation.

Research Questions

  1. How are Efik language policies being implemented in Cross River State?

  2. What challenges affect policy execution?

  3. How can the implementation process be improved?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical assessment of Efik language policy implementation, offering insights for policymakers and educators to refine strategies for language preservation. The findings will help bridge the gap between policy intent and practice, ensuring the sustainability of the Efik language (Inyang, 2023; Ekpo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to Efik language policy implementation in Cross River State and does not extend to other language policies or regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Language Policy Implementation: The execution of language policies in practical settings.

  • Efik Language: The indigenous language of the Efik people.
