Background of the Study
Language mixing, a prevalent phenomenon in urban centers like Lagos, involves the blending of multiple linguistic codes to create new forms of communication. Among Lagos youths, Nigerian Pidgin serves as a flexible medium that often incorporates elements from English, Yoruba, and other Nigerian languages. This amalgamation is celebrated for its creativity and adaptability but also raises concerns regarding semantic precision. Language mixing can lead to the emergence of expressions with ambiguous meanings, where the intended semantic message may be obscured by overlapping linguistic influences (Oluwaseun, 2023). The dynamic nature of Nigerian Pidgin reflects the multicultural vibrancy of Lagos; however, it also challenges the standardization of meaning. This study investigates how language mixing among Lagos youths affects the semantic precision of Nigerian Pidgin. By examining everyday conversations, social media discourse, and informal interactions, the research aims to identify the factors that contribute to semantic ambiguity. The analysis seeks to balance the innovative aspects of language mixing with the need for clear communication, ultimately proposing recommendations to preserve semantic clarity without stifling linguistic creativity (Adebola, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
The prevalence of language mixing among Lagos youths has led to concerns over the semantic precision of Nigerian Pidgin. While the creative blending of languages enriches communication, it also creates instances of ambiguity where meanings become imprecise (Oluwaseun, 2023). This issue is particularly significant in contexts requiring clear understanding, such as education and professional interactions. The fluid boundaries between linguistic codes in mixed language expressions may result in misinterpretations and communication breakdowns (Adebola, 2024). The absence of standardized guidelines for language mixing exacerbates these challenges, leaving speakers to navigate a complex semantic landscape without clear reference points. This study addresses these concerns by exploring the effects of language mixing on semantic precision and suggesting measures to enhance clarity in Nigerian Pidgin discourse.

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the impact of language mixing on semantic clarity in Nigerian Pidgin.

  • To identify common sources of semantic ambiguity in mixed language use.

  • To propose strategies for maintaining semantic precision while embracing linguistic diversity.

Research Questions

  • How does language mixing influence semantic precision in Nigerian Pidgin?

  • What are the primary causes of semantic ambiguity in mixed language expressions?

  • What measures can improve clarity in the use of Nigerian Pidgin among youths?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the effects of language mixing on the semantic precision of Nigerian Pidgin among Lagos youths. The findings will inform educators, linguists, and communication experts about the balance between creative expression and clear communication. By addressing semantic ambiguity, the research supports the development of strategies that preserve the innovative character of Nigerian Pidgin while ensuring that its meaning remains accessible and precise (Oluwaseun, 2023; Adebola, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the effect of language mixing on semantic precision in Nigerian Pidgin among Lagos youths and does not cover other linguistic phenomena.

Definitions of Terms

  • Language Mixing: The blending of elements from different languages within a single communicative context.

  • Semantic Precision: The clarity and exactness of meaning conveyed in language.

  • Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely used in Nigeria, known for its fluidity and adaptability.
