Background of the Study
Government initiatives have increasingly focused on language revitalization as a means to preserve cultural heritage and promote social inclusion. In Onitsha, various programs—such as language workshops, media campaigns, and curriculum enhancements—have been introduced to revitalize the Igbo language. These initiatives aim to increase the visibility of Igbo in public spaces, enhance language proficiency among youth, and foster a renewed sense of cultural identity (Okafor, 2023). By leveraging both traditional and modern platforms, government programs seek to bridge the gap between academic language use and everyday communication. The revitalization efforts are also linked to broader socio-economic objectives, including improved educational outcomes and stronger community engagement. This study explores the impact of these government initiatives on Igbo language revitalization in Onitsha by analyzing program outcomes, stakeholder perspectives, and changes in language usage patterns over time (Ike, 2024). The research intends to provide insights into the effectiveness of current strategies and suggest improvements for future policy implementation.
Statement of the Problem
Despite targeted government initiatives, Igbo language revitalization in Onitsha continues to face challenges. Factors such as limited funding, inadequate teacher training, and the dominance of global languages in digital media impede the successful implementation of revitalization programs. Current policies often fail to reach younger generations or adapt to changing communication modes, leading to a gradual erosion of Igbo language proficiency. This study addresses the gap by examining the effectiveness of government initiatives and identifying key obstacles that hinder language revitalization in Onitsha (Okafor, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of government initiatives on Igbo language revitalization.
To identify challenges impacting program success.
To propose recommendations for enhancing revitalization efforts.
