Background of the Study
Humor is a potent communicative tool that reflects cultural nuances and social attitudes, and in Enugu, urban comedians frequently harness the Igbo language to craft witty, layered jokes that resonate with diverse audiences. The semantics of humor in Igbo is characterized by wordplay, double entendres, and the strategic use of idiomatic expressions that often carry cultural references and historical allusions (Nnadi, 2023). This study explores how comedians use semantic creativity to navigate sensitive topics, critique societal norms, and forge a collective identity through laughter. In urban settings, where diverse influences converge, the humorous use of language serves both as entertainment and as a medium for social commentary. The evolving nature of humor in Igbo reflects broader changes in language use driven by globalization, media influence, and generational shifts. By analyzing performances, dialogues, and public reactions, this research investigates the intricate relationship between humor and semantic innovation, revealing how humor functions as a dynamic reflection of cultural continuity and transformation (Anya, 2024). Statement of the Problem
Despite its cultural significance, the semantics of humor in Igbo, particularly as used by urban comedians in Enugu, faces challenges due to rapid linguistic changes and external influences. The creative expressions employed in humorous discourse are often context-specific and may become inaccessible to audiences unfamiliar with traditional references (Nnadi, 2023). Moreover, as contemporary themes merge with traditional humor, there is a risk of misinterpretation or loss of the intended meaning (Anya, 2024). These challenges highlight a potential dilution of culturally embedded humor that has historically played a vital role in social bonding and critique. Addressing these issues requires a systematic investigation into the semantic mechanisms underlying humor in urban Igbo, aiming to preserve its richness and relevance in a changing cultural landscape.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the semantics of humor in Igbo language among urban comedians in Enugu and does not cover humor in other regions or languages.
