Background of the Study
Lagos is a bustling metropolis characterized by its linguistic diversity, with Yoruba communities playing a significant role in the region’s cultural landscape. Language planning strategies in these multilingual settings aim to balance the preservation of Yoruba language and culture with the demands of a cosmopolitan society. Local governments, community organizations, and educational institutions have implemented initiatives to promote Yoruba through cultural festivals, language courses, and media production (Ogunleye, 2023). These strategies are designed to facilitate communication among speakers of various languages while ensuring that Yoruba remains a vital element of community identity. However, the complexity of urban multilingualism poses challenges for effective language planning. The study investigates how planning strategies are developed and implemented in Yoruba communities in Lagos, analyzing policy documents, community practices, and educational frameworks to assess their success and identify areas for improvement (Adegoke, 2024). The research underscores the importance of strategic language planning in fostering cultural continuity and social cohesion in a rapidly evolving urban environment.

Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous initiatives, effective language planning in multilingual Yoruba communities in Lagos remains problematic. Challenges such as resource limitations, conflicting linguistic priorities, and rapid urbanization undermine the impact of language planning strategies. Existing research often overlooks the specific planning mechanisms used in urban Yoruba contexts, creating a gap in understanding how best to support the language in a multilingual setting. This study aims to address these issues by critically examining current language planning strategies and their implementation, thereby identifying obstacles and proposing targeted improvements (Ogunleye, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate current language planning strategies in Yoruba communities in Lagos.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies.

  3. To recommend improvements for enhanced language sustainability.

Research Questions

  1. What language planning strategies are in place in Yoruba communities in Lagos?

  2. How effective are these strategies in preserving the Yoruba language?

  3. What challenges impede successful language planning?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on language planning in a complex multilingual urban setting, providing insights that can inform policy, education, and community practices. The findings will benefit language planners, cultural advocates, and policymakers striving to preserve Yoruba in Lagos (Ogunleye, 2023; Adegoke, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to language planning strategies in multilingual Yoruba communities in Lagos and does not extend to other regions or language groups.

Definitions of Terms

  • Language Planning: The development of policies and strategies for language use and preservation.

  • Multilingual: The presence or use of multiple languages within a community.
