Background of the Study
Nigerian Pidgin has evolved from a lingua franca into a vibrant medium of communication across urban centers, playing an increasingly important role in national language planning. As a flexible and expressive language variety, Nigerian Pidgin bridges ethnic and linguistic divides, serving as an informal yet powerful tool for everyday communication in cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt (Adeola, 2023). National language planning traditionally focuses on standard languages; however, the dynamic nature of Nigerian Pidgin challenges conventional paradigms by demonstrating its capacity to facilitate cross-cultural interactions and mass communication. Its incorporation in media, literature, and digital platforms underscores its relevance in contemporary society. This study assesses the role of Nigerian Pidgin in national language planning by examining its institutional recognition, use in public discourse, and influence on cultural identity among urban populations. The research aims to determine whether Nigerian Pidgin should be considered a key component in language policy frameworks, given its widespread use and cultural significance (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite its ubiquity in urban communication, Nigerian Pidgin’s role in formal national language planning remains ambiguous. Policymakers and language planners often overlook Pidgin in favor of standardized languages, thereby neglecting its influence on national discourse and cultural identity. This oversight creates a disconnect between language policy and the linguistic realities of urban populations. The study seeks to investigate the extent to which Nigerian Pidgin is integrated into national language planning initiatives, and how its exclusion may affect effective communication and social cohesion in urban centers (Adeola, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the current role of Nigerian Pidgin in urban communication.

  2. To evaluate its integration into national language planning frameworks.

  3. To propose policy recommendations that acknowledge its importance.

Research Questions

  1. How is Nigerian Pidgin used in urban centers for everyday communication?

  2. What is its current status within national language planning?

  3. What measures can enhance its institutional recognition?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the pivotal role of Nigerian Pidgin in urban communication and its potential contribution to national language planning. The findings will assist policymakers, educators, and cultural advocates in recognizing and incorporating Pidgin into language policy frameworks, thereby enhancing social inclusion and cultural representation (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the role of Nigerian Pidgin in national language planning in urban centers and does not cover rural language practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nigerian Pidgin: A widely spoken, informal creole language in Nigeria.

  • National Language Planning: The development of policies to regulate and promote language use at a national level.

  • Urban Centers: Major cities where diverse linguistic practices converge.
