Background of the Study
Yoruba traditional ceremonies are rich cultural events where discourse organization plays a critical role in ritual performance and social cohesion. Audience engagement, marked by active participation, call-and-response patterns, and communal chants, significantly influences the structure and flow of discourse during these ceremonies (Adebayo, 2023). These ceremonies often incorporate prearranged narrative structures that are dynamically adapted based on real-time audience feedback. The interplay between the performer and the audience creates a living narrative, where traditional language, music, and dance converge to reinforce cultural identity. Research has demonstrated that higher levels of audience engagement enhance the overall coherence and emotional impact of the discourse (Ogunleye, 2024). In Yoruba ceremonies, the audience not only receives the message but also contributes to its evolution through spontaneous interaction and cultural participation. This study examines the effect of audience engagement on the organization of discourse in Yoruba traditional ceremonies, exploring how interactive communication shapes the ceremonial narrative and reinforces community values (Adebayo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the acknowledged importance of audience engagement in Yoruba traditional ceremonies, there is limited research that systematically examines its effect on discourse organization. Many studies focus on the performance aspects without delving into how real-time audience participation influences narrative structure and communication flow (Ogunleye, 2024). This gap in literature limits our understanding of the mechanisms through which audience interaction reinforces cultural identity and narrative coherence. This study seeks to fill this void by investigating the specific ways in which audience engagement alters discourse patterns during ceremonies and assessing its overall impact on the effectiveness of traditional communication.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document audience engagement practices in Yoruba ceremonies.

  2. To analyze their effect on discourse organization.

  3. To assess the impact on narrative coherence and cultural transmission.

Research Questions

  1. How does audience engagement influence discourse organization in Yoruba ceremonies?

  2. What interaction patterns emerge during these events?

  3. How does engagement enhance narrative coherence?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it illuminates the role of audience engagement in structuring discourse during Yoruba traditional ceremonies. The findings will benefit cultural practitioners, event organizers, and communication scholars by providing insights into how interactive participation reinforces cultural narratives and improves communication effectiveness (Adebayo, 2023; Ogunleye, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to Yoruba traditional ceremonies and does not extend to other cultural or modern performance contexts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Audience Engagement: Active participation and interaction of event attendees.

  • Discourse Organization: The structured arrangement of communication elements.
