Background of the Study
Speaker gender is an influential factor in shaping discourse styles, particularly within the politically charged environment of Yoruba political debates in Ibadan. Gendered communication patterns often emerge in debates, reflecting broader social roles and expectations. In Yoruba political debates, male and female speakers may employ distinct rhetorical strategies, tone modulation, and argument structures that reflect their cultural identities and societal positions (Adebayo, 2023). Research indicates that gender influences not only the style but also the content of political discourse, with variations in persuasive techniques and language usage (Ogunleye, 2024). These differences can affect audience perception, speaker credibility, and the overall dynamics of political debate. This study investigates the effect of speaker gender on discourse styles in Yoruba political debates, examining how linguistic choices and presentation styles vary between genders and how these variations impact political persuasion and public reception. The analysis is grounded in recorded debates and discourse analysis frameworks, offering insights into the interplay between gender, language, and power in political communication (Adebayo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
While gender differences in political discourse have been documented in various contexts, there is limited research specifically addressing the effect of speaker gender on discourse styles in Yoruba political debates in Ibadan. Existing studies often generalize gendered communication without delving into the nuanced ways in which male and female speakers construct their arguments and engage with audiences (Ogunleye, 2024). This gap hinders the understanding of how gendered discourse influences public perception and political effectiveness. The study seeks to address this gap by critically examining the variations in discourse styles based on speaker gender, thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of political communication dynamics.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the discourse styles of male and female speakers in Yoruba political debates.

  2. To identify gender-specific rhetorical strategies.

  3. To assess the impact of these differences on audience perception.

Research Questions

  1. How do male and female speakers differ in their discourse styles during political debates?

  2. What gender-specific rhetorical strategies are employed?

  3. How do these differences affect audience engagement and persuasion?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the role of speaker gender in shaping discourse styles within Yoruba political debates, offering insights into how gender influences political communication. The findings will benefit political analysts, gender studies scholars, and communication practitioners by clarifying the impact of gender on rhetorical effectiveness and audience perception. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of the intersection between gender and language in political settings (Adebayo, 2023; Ogunleye, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the examination of speaker gender effects on discourse styles in Yoruba political debates in Ibadan and does not include other aspects of political communication or other regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Speaker Gender: The identification of speakers as male or female and its influence on communication style.

  • Discourse Styles: The characteristic ways in which language is used in communication.
