Background of the Study
Campaign speeches in Nigeria serve as pivotal platforms for political persuasion, and in Abeokuta, Yoruba campaign speeches exemplify the intricate use of rhetorical strategies to mobilize support and shape public opinion. These speeches are characterized by the use of persuasive language, repetition, and culturally resonant metaphors that appeal to the electorate’s emotions and values (Akinwale, 2023). Yoruba campaigners skillfully integrate traditional rhetorical techniques with modern political discourse, thus creating speeches that are both compelling and contextually relevant. The rhetorical strategies employed include the use of parallelism, alliteration, and the invocation of proverbs, which serve to reinforce communal identity and solidarity (Ogun, 2024). This study assesses how these strategies are deployed to enhance persuasive impact and drive political engagement. By examining recorded speeches and analyzing linguistic patterns, the research aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of how rhetoric is tailored to resonate with the local populace in Abeokuta. The study also explores the role of audience feedback in refining these strategies, highlighting the dynamic interaction between speaker and listener in political discourse (Akinwale, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of rhetorical strategies in political persuasion, there is limited research focused on the specific techniques employed in Yoruba campaign speeches in Abeokuta. Existing literature often generalizes political rhetoric without addressing the unique cultural and linguistic elements that characterize local campaign discourse (Ogun, 2024). This gap restricts the ability to understand how these strategies influence voter behavior and contribute to political mobilization. Moreover, the evolving political landscape necessitates a deeper analysis of traditional versus modern rhetorical approaches in campaign speeches. The study intends to address these gaps by critically evaluating the rhetorical strategies in Yoruba campaign speeches, thereby shedding light on their effectiveness and impact on audience persuasion.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the predominant rhetorical strategies in Yoruba campaign speeches.

  2. To analyze how these strategies are adapted to local cultural contexts.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in influencing public opinion.

Research Questions

  1. What rhetorical techniques are most frequently used in Yoruba campaign speeches in Abeokuta?

  2. How are cultural elements integrated into these speeches?

  3. What is the impact of these strategies on audience persuasion?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the nuanced rhetorical strategies used in Yoruba campaign speeches, providing insights that can enhance political communication and campaign effectiveness. The findings will benefit political strategists, communication scholars, and cultural analysts by clarifying how persuasive rhetoric operates within a local context. The research contributes to a better understanding of the interplay between language, culture, and politics, with implications for both academic inquiry and practical campaign management (Akinwale, 2023; Ogun, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to an assessment of rhetorical strategies in Yoruba campaign speeches in Abeokuta and does not cover speeches in other regions or languages.
