Background of the Study
Hausa oral histories in Kano represent a rich tapestry of narrative complexity that encapsulates historical, social, and cultural dimensions. These oral histories employ multi-layered narrative techniques including allegory, metaphor, and non-linear storytelling, which are essential in conveying the depth of Hausa heritage (Abubakar, 2023). The intricate narrative structures not only document historical events but also serve as a means of transmitting moral and ethical values across generations. Scholars have observed that the narrative complexity in Hausa oral traditions often involves interweaving myth with factual recounting, creating a dynamic form of historical discourse (Sani, 2024). In Kano, oral historians employ a variety of performance techniques, such as vocal modulation and dramatic pauses, to enhance the storytelling experience. These methods contribute to the overall complexity of the narratives by providing multiple layers of meaning and encouraging active audience participation. The interplay of tradition and innovation in these narratives reflects broader cultural trends, where the preservation of heritage is balanced with contemporary interpretative methods. This study seeks to appraise the narrative complexity in Hausa oral histories by systematically analyzing their structural and stylistic elements (Abubakar, 2023; Sani, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the acknowledged importance of narrative complexity in preserving Hausa oral histories, there is a scarcity of focused research on the specific narrative structures employed in Kano. Existing studies tend to provide a general overview of oral traditions without delving deeply into the layered complexity that characterizes these narratives (Musa, 2024). This lack of detailed analysis hampers efforts to fully appreciate the cultural significance and educational value of Hausa oral histories. Moreover, rapid social changes pose a risk to the transmission of these complex narrative forms. The study aims to address these gaps by critically evaluating the narrative structures and performance techniques used in Hausa oral histories in Kano.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the narrative structures within Hausa oral histories.

  2. To analyze the complexity of storytelling techniques.

  3. To assess the cultural significance of these narratives.

Research Questions

  1. What narrative techniques characterize Hausa oral histories in Kano?

  2. How is narrative complexity achieved in these oral traditions?

  3. What cultural values are conveyed through these narratives?

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the broader understanding of oral traditions by providing a detailed appraisal of narrative complexity in Hausa oral histories. The insights gained will aid cultural preservation efforts and inform educational methodologies. The research is valuable for historians, linguists, and cultural practitioners aiming to safeguard and promote indigenous storytelling practices (Abubakar, 2023; Sani, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to the appraisal of narrative complexity in Hausa oral histories as documented in Kano and does not include oral traditions from other regions.

Definitions of Terms
