Background of the Study
Yoruba poetry in Abeokuta is a vibrant medium for expressing cultural identity, social commentary, and aesthetic innovation. The thematic structure of these poetic works is a critical aspect of their appeal, reflecting the interplay between tradition and modernity (Akin, 2023). Themes such as love, resistance, nature, and spirituality are intricately woven into the poetic narratives, offering insights into the socio-cultural milieu of the Yoruba people. Recent studies have shown that the organization of themes in Yoruba poetry not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also serves as a vehicle for conveying deep cultural messages and historical experiences (Ola, 2024). In Abeokuta, where historical narratives and contemporary realities converge, poets often employ a layered thematic approach that challenges conventional forms of expression. This study appraises the thematic structures in Yoruba poetry by critically analyzing how themes are developed, interrelated, and communicated through innovative stylistic devices. The research situates these poetic practices within a broader literary tradition while also considering the influence of modern literary trends, thereby offering a comprehensive understanding of thematic evolution in Yoruba poetry (Akin, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Although Yoruba poetry is celebrated for its rich thematic expression, there is insufficient research that systematically examines the structural organization of themes in poetic works from Abeokuta. The complexity of interwoven themes often obscures the underlying narrative coherence, making it challenging to discern the intentional structuring by the poets (Ola, 2024). This lack of focused analysis hinders a full appreciation of the cultural and literary significance of Yoruba poetry. Furthermore, without a clear understanding of how thematic structures are crafted, efforts to integrate these insights into broader literary and educational discourses remain limited. The study addresses this gap by evaluating the thematic structures present in Yoruba poetry and exploring their implications for both literary theory and cultural practice.
