ABSTRACT: Early childhood education (ECE) plays a crucial role in fostering friendships among young children, which are essential for their social and emotional development. This study examines how ECE programs contribute to the development of friendships in early childhood. The objectives are to (1) assess the quality and quantity of friendships among children in ECE programs, (2) evaluate the impact of friendship-promoting activities in ECE settings, and (3) compare the friendship-building skills of children who attend ECE programs with those who do not. A survey design was chosen to collect quantitative data on friendships and qualitative insights from teachers and parents. A purposive sample of 150 children from preschools in Anambra State was selected. The case study focuses on preschools known for their friendship-building initiatives. Findings indicated that children attending ECE programs formed more and better-quality friendships compared to those not in such programs. Activities designed to promote friendships were highly effective. Recommendations include incorporating structured friendship-building activities into ECE curricula and supporting educators in fostering friendships among young children.
