ABSTRACT: The role of early childhood education in self-directed learning is crucial for understanding how early educational experiences foster children's ability to take charge of their learning processes. This study examines how early childhood education programs influence the development of self-directed learning skills. The objectives are to (1) assess improvements in children's ability to set learning goals, (2) evaluate the integration of self-directed learning activities in early childhood education curricula, and (3) examine changes in children's independence and motivation to learn. A survey design is employed to gather comprehensive data on the role of early childhood education in self-directed learning. A purposive sample of 120 children from preschools in Rivers State was used. The case study focuses on a preschool known for its self-directed learning program. Findings revealed significant improvements in children's ability to set learning goals, the effectiveness of self-directed learning activities, and positive changes in children's independence and motivation to learn. Recommendations included integrating self-directed learning activities into early childhood curricula and providing ongoing professional development for educators to enhance children's self-directed learning skills.
