Abstract: AN ASSESSMENT OF FUND ACCOUNTING IN VENTURE CAPITAL INVESTMENTS

The objectives of this study are to: (1) analyze the specific accounting requirements for venture capital investments; (2) assess the impact of accurate accounting on the performance and valuation of venture capital funds; and (3) identify the challenges and best practices in managing venture capital investments. A survey research design was chosen to gather data from industry professionals. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 290 fund accountants and venture capital managers from Lagos, Nigeria, was determined to be sufficient. The study includes a case study of a prominent venture capital firm in Lagos to provide practical insights. A reliability coefficient score of 0.86 confirms the reliability of the survey instrument. Findings reveal that precise accounting practices are essential for valuing startups, managing financial risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance in venture capital investments. The study identifies challenges such as the valuation of early-stage companies and the complexity of managing diverse investment portfolios. Recommendations include adopting specialized accounting tools for venture capital, enhancing training programs for fund accountants, and implementing robust valuation techniques to ensure accurate and reliable financial reporting for venture capital investments.
