THE EFFECT OF DEMOGRAPHIC SHIFTS ON GOVERNMENTAL ACCOUNTING PRACTICES

Abstract

This study examines the effect of demographic shifts on governmental accounting practices, focusing on changes in population dynamics and their impact on public financial management. The objectives are to assess how demographic changes influence accounting practices, to identify challenges, and to propose strategies for adapting to these changes. A survey research design was used to gather data from government accountants and demographers. A sample size of 350 was derived using Taro Yamane's formula from a population of 150,000, ensuring a representative sample. The case study was conducted in Lagos, known for its diverse and rapidly changing population. The reliability coefficient score of the survey instrument was 0.86, indicating high reliability. Findings indicate that demographic shifts significantly impact budgeting and financial planning, requiring adaptive accounting practices. Challenges include managing increased demand for public services and adjusting financial forecasts. The study recommends that governmental entities adopt flexible accounting practices and enhance demographic data collection to improve financial planning and resource allocation.
