THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENTAL ACCOUNTANTS IN PUBLIC FINANCE MANAGEMENT
Abstract
This research explores the critical role of governmental accountants in public finance management, focusing on budgeting, financial planning, and fiscal accountability. The objectives are to analyze the contributions of governmental accountants to effective public finance management, to assess the challenges they face, and to evaluate strategies for enhancing their role. A survey research design was employed, enabling the collection of quantitative data from government finance officers and accountants. A sample size of 380 respondents was derived using Taro Yamane's formula from a population of approximately 180,000, ensuring a statistically significant representation. The case study was conducted in Lagos, Nigeria's financial hub. The reliability coefficient score of the survey instrument was 0.88, indicating excellent reliability. Findings highlight that governmental accountants are essential in ensuring accurate budgeting and financial planning, though they often face challenges such as limited resources and political interference. The study recommends strengthening the independence of governmental accountants and providing continuous professional development to enhance their effectiveness in public finance management.
