THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON GOVERNMENTAL ACCOUNTING PRACTICES

Abstract

This research examines the impact of technology on governmental accounting practices, focusing on efficiency, transparency, and accuracy in financial management. The objectives are to assess the role of technology in enhancing accounting processes, to evaluate the benefits and challenges of implementing technological solutions, and to explore future trends in governmental accounting technology. A survey research design was employed, collecting data from government accountants and IT specialists. The sample size of 370 was derived using Taro Yamane’s formula from a population of 170,000, ensuring a representative sample. The case study was conducted in Abuja, given its advanced technological infrastructure and status as Nigeria’s capital. The reliability coefficient score of the survey instrument was 0.89, indicating high reliability. Findings indicate that technology significantly enhances the efficiency and accuracy of accounting practices, but challenges such as cybersecurity threats and the need for continuous training remain. The study recommends investing in advanced technological solutions and providing ongoing training to government accountants to fully leverage the benefits of technology in governmental accounting.
