AN ASSESSMENT OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTING METHODS IN MERGER AND ACQUISITION
ABSTRACT
The study aims to assess the effectiveness of public accounting methods in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) by examining the objectives of financial transparency, valuation accuracy, and compliance with regulatory standards. A survey research design was adopted to gather data from accountants and financial analysts, as this method effectively captures the perceptions and experiences of professionals in the field. Using Taro Yamane’s formula, a sample size of 398 was determined from a population of 15,000 registered accountants in Lagos, ensuring a 95% confidence level and a 5% margin of error. Lagos was selected due to its status as Nigeria’s financial hub and the high volume of M&A activities. The study utilized a reliability coefficient score of 0.87, indicating high reliability of the survey instrument. Findings revealed that public accounting methods significantly enhance financial transparency and compliance but often fall short in achieving accurate valuations, largely due to inconsistent application of methodologies. The study recommends the development of standardized valuation frameworks and continuous professional training to address these gaps.
