Abstract

THE ROLE OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS IN CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR) REPORTING

This study explores the role of public accountants in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting. The objectives are to evaluate the involvement of public accountants in CSR reporting, to assess the impact of CSR reporting on corporate transparency and accountability, and to identify the challenges faced by public accountants in CSR reporting. A survey research design was adopted to gather data from public accounting professionals and corporate executives. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 230 respondents was determined, ensuring statistical reliability and representativeness. The study focuses on Lagos, Nigeria, due to its significant corporate presence and growing emphasis on CSR initiatives. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument was 0.88, indicating high reliability. Findings reveal that public accountants play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of CSR reports, thereby enhancing corporate transparency and accountability. However, challenges such as the lack of standardized reporting frameworks, insufficient training, and resistance from within organizations were identified. The study recommends that accounting bodies develop comprehensive guidelines for CSR reporting and that public accountants undergo continuous training to effectively handle CSR reporting requirements.
