Abstract: ASSESSMENT OF THE ROLE OF FORENSIC ACCOUNTING IN ASSET RECOVERY AND RESTITUTION

This study assesses the role of forensic accounting in asset recovery and restitution, focusing on its effectiveness in tracing and recovering misappropriated assets. The objectives are to evaluate the methodologies used by forensic accountants, assess the success rate of asset recovery efforts, and identify challenges faced. A survey research design was adopted, collecting data from 300 forensic accountants and legal professionals in Lagos. The sample size was determined using Taro Yamane's formula, ensuring significant representation. The reliability coefficient score of the survey was 0.88. Findings indicate that forensic accounting plays a crucial role in asset recovery and restitution, employing advanced tracing techniques and forensic investigations. However, challenges such as limited access to comprehensive financial data and the complexity of asset tracing can hinder effectiveness. Recommendations include enhancing regulatory frameworks to improve data access and investing in advanced forensic tools and training to enhance asset recovery capabilities.
