Abstract: AN ASSESSMENT OF CYBERSECURITY BREACHES AND FORENSIC ACCOUNTING RESPONSES
This study assesses the responses of forensic accounting to cybersecurity breaches, aiming to understand the preparedness, response strategies, and effectiveness of forensic accounting in mitigating cyber threats. The objectives are to evaluate the level of preparedness of forensic accountants for cyber incidents, to examine the response strategies employed, and to measure the effectiveness of these responses in mitigating breaches. Utilizing a survey research design, data was collected from 300 forensic accountants in Port Harcourt, a major hub for technological and industrial activities. The sample size was justified using Taro Yamane's formula, providing a representative sample. The survey instrument's reliability coefficient score was 0.87. Findings reveal that while forensic accountants are well-prepared for traditional fraud, there is a significant gap in their readiness for complex cyber incidents. Response strategies are often reactive rather than proactive, leading to delayed breach containment. It is recommended that continuous professional development in cybersecurity be mandatory for forensic accountants, and that organizations adopt integrated cyber-forensic frameworks to enhance their breach response capabilities.
