Abstract: THE PROSPECT AND CHALLENGES OF COST ACCOUNTING FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISES (SMES)

This study explores the prospects and challenges associated with cost accounting for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Kano. The objectives are to evaluate the role of cost accounting in financial management, assess its impact on cost control, and identify the challenges faced by SMEs. A survey design was utilized, gathering data from 200 financial managers and cost accountants in SMEs, derived using Taro Yamane's formula. A case study of a prominent SME in Kano provided detailed insights. The reliability coefficient score was 0.86. Findings indicate that cost accounting plays a crucial role in SME financial management by providing detailed cost information and facilitating better decision-making. However, challenges such as limited resources and complex regulations were identified. Recommendations include providing more training for SME accountants, simplifying regulatory requirements, and integrating cost accounting with overall financial management practices to improve organizational effectiveness.
