ABSTRACT

Relationship between teachers‟ recruitment procedure and students‟ achievement in commerce among Federal Government Girls‟ Colleges examines the utilization of government policies in teachers‟ recruitment in relation to students‟ achievement in commerce. This study was undertaken with the general objective to examine the relationship between teachers‟ recruitment procedure and its influence on students‟ achievement in commerce in Federal Government Girls‟ Colleges located in the NorthWestern part of Nigeria. Four specific objectives of the study were highlighted and four research questions were raised to guide the study. Four null hypotheses were formulated to be tested at 0.05 level of significance for this study. A descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The entire population for this study consisted of 504 subjects made up of teachers and SS3 commerce students of these colleges. Sample size of 252 subjects was drawn from the entire population using purposive sampling technique. Data collection was done through structured questionnaire and were analysed by using mean, standard deviation, frequency distribution, percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) statistics. The findings from the research questions analysis showed that teachers‟ recruitment procedure, adequate number of commerce teachers in a college, teachers‟ years of teaching experience as well as methods for effective teaching of commerce were related to students‟ achievement in commerce. Also, the four null hypotheses formulated were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The four null hypotheses were rejected. It therefore showed that teachers‟ recruitment procedure, number of commerce teachers in a college, teachers‟ years of teaching experience and methods for effective teaching of commerce were significantly related to students‟ achievement in the subject. The researcher concluded from the findings that teachers‟ recruitment procedure, adequate number of commerce teachers in a college, teachers‟ years of teaching experience and effective teaching methods will positively affect students‟ achievement in commerce. The researcher therefore recommended among other things that Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Civil Service Commission should adopt a realistic and competitive recruitment policy that will attract recruitment of suitably qualified commerce teachers into federal government colleges in order to enhance students‟ achievement in commerce.
