Background of the study

Social media platforms are key drivers of linguistic innovation in Nigeria. Facebook and Instagram, in particular, offer distinct environments for creative language use. Facebook, with its lengthy posts and public comments, encourages the integration of formal language and local slang, resulting in innovative expressions and syntactic constructions. Instagram, by contrast, emphasizes visual content with succinct captions, hashtags, and emojis, fostering a culture of abbreviated and inventive language (Ibrahim, 2024). This comparative study investigates how these platforms stimulate different forms of linguistic innovation. By analyzing user-generated content, the research aims to uncover emerging lexical items, syntactic patterns, and semantic shifts that characterize Nigerian digital discourse. The study will assess the role of platform affordances, audience demographics, and cultural influences in shaping language evolution, providing insights into how digital environments contribute to ongoing linguistic change (Adeola, 2023; Obi, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite evidence of linguistic innovation on social media, there is limited comparative research on how Facebook and Instagram influence language change in Nigeria. Existing studies often address these platforms separately, missing the opportunity to analyze differences and commonalities in digital language evolution. This gap restricts our ability to develop effective educational and policy responses to rapidly changing linguistic practices in online environments (Chinwe, 2023).

Objectives of the study

• To compare linguistic innovations on Facebook and Instagram.

• To identify factors driving language change on each platform.

• To propose recommendations for language education and policy.

Research questions

• What forms of linguistic innovation are evident on Facebook versus Instagram?

• How do platform-specific features affect language change?

• What are the broader implications for Nigerian digital discourse?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of linguistic innovation on Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and offer practical insights for educators and policymakers adapting to evolving digital language trends (Ibrahim, 2024; Obi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is confined to Nigerian Facebook and Instagram content; it does not consider other platforms or offline language use.

Definitions of terms

• Linguistic Innovation: The emergence of new language forms.

• Social Media: Digital platforms for online communication.

• Comparative Analysis: Systematic comparison between subjects.
