Background of the study
Online code mixing, the blending of two or more languages within a single communication, is a common phenomenon in Nigerian digital discourse. WhatsApp group chats, in particular, provide a dynamic environment for code mixing due to their informal, real time nature. In these settings, users frequently intersperse indigenous languages with English or Pidgin English to express identity, humor, and solidarity (Obi, 2023). Such practices not only reflect Nigeria’s multilingual reality but also contribute to the evolution of digital language. This study investigates code mixing in WhatsApp group chats, exploring the patterns, motivations, and outcomes of language blending. It seeks to identify how the intimate and spontaneous nature of group chats fosters innovative linguistic practices and supports digital bilingualism (Ibrahim, 2024). The findings will provide insights into the role of digital platforms in shaping language use and inform both theoretical and practical approaches to multilingual communication (Adeola, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although code mixing is widespread in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats, there is limited research that examines its specific linguistic characteristics and social implications. Most studies focus on general digital communication without isolating the nuanced practices of group chats. This gap hampers our understanding of how code mixing is employed to negotiate identity and maintain group cohesion in digital spaces, making it challenging for educators and policymakers to address multilingual communication needs effectively (Chinwe, 2023).

2. To analyze the sociolinguistic factors driving code mixing.
3. To assess its impact on digital communication.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it assesses online code mixing in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats, enhancing our understanding of digital bilingualism and informing language policy and education (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to WhatsApp group chats among Nigerian users; other platforms and offline interactions are not considered.
