Background of the study

Code switching, the practice of alternating between languages, is a salient feature of Nigerian digital communication. On Instagram, users often combine indigenous languages with English in captions and comments to express identity and cultural nuance, while Twitter’s concise format encourages rapid shifts in language for emphasis or humor (Obi, 2023). These platforms provide differing contexts for code switching: Instagram supports visually integrated, creative language use, whereas Twitter’s brevity fosters sharp, impactful alternations. The study examines how platform-specific constraints and audience expectations influence code switching practices, thereby contributing to digital bilingualism in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024). By analyzing a corpus of posts from both platforms, the research aims to reveal patterns, motivations, and functions of code switching that are unique to the digital environment (Adeola, 2023).

Statement of the problem

Although code switching is common in Nigerian social media, comparative research on its manifestation across Instagram and Twitter is limited. Existing studies generally focus on one platform, thereby missing the nuances driven by different technological and cultural contexts. This gap impedes our understanding of digital bilingualism and the factors that shape language alternation online, leaving educators and policymakers without sufficient data for informed decisions (Chinwe, 2023).

Objectives of the study

1. To document code switching patterns on Instagram and Twitter.

2. To identify factors influencing language alternation.

3. To compare the functions of code switching across platforms.

Research questions

1. What are the common code switching patterns on Instagram and Twitter?

2. What factors drive these linguistic shifts?

3. How do these practices vary between platforms?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides insight into digital code switching in Nigerian social media, enhancing understanding of multilingual practices and informing language policy and education (Ibrahim, 2024; Obi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

Focused on Instagram and Twitter posts by Nigerian users; excludes other media and offline contexts.

Definitions of terms

• Code Switching: Alternating between languages in communication.

• Digital Bilingualism: The use of multiple languages online.

• Social Media Posts: User-generated content on digital platforms.
