Background of the study
Digital communication has revolutionized linguistic expression in Nigeria, particularly in how syntax is negotiated in online environments. Facebook comments, characterized by their public and often extended nature, encourage users to adopt elaborate syntactic structures that blend formal language with localized digital shorthand. In contrast, WhatsApp chats—used primarily for private, real time conversations—exhibit more spontaneous and abbreviated syntactic forms. Nigerian users adjust their language according to platform affordances: Facebook tends to support more structured discourse, while WhatsApp promotes casual, fragmented sentence constructions (Ibrahim, 2024). This comparative study examines how the distinct communicative environments of Facebook and WhatsApp influence syntactic choices, contributing to broader language change in digital spaces. By analyzing corpora from both platforms, the research aims to identify patterns of syntax variation and assess the factors—such as audience, context, and technological constraints—that drive these differences (Adeola, 2023; Obi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing influence of digital media on language, little research has comparatively examined syntax in Nigerian Facebook comments versus WhatsApp chats. Existing studies tend to focus on one medium in isolation, neglecting how varying communication contexts shape syntactic behavior. This gap limits our ability to develop comprehensive models of digital syntax variation and hinders the formulation of effective language education policies that address these trends (Chinwe, 2023).
Objectives of the study
1. To identify syntactic patterns in Facebook comments and WhatsApp chats.
2. To compare how platform-specific features influence syntax.
3. To propose recommendations for integrating findings into language education.
Research questions
1. What syntactic variations are evident on Facebook versus WhatsApp?
2. How do contextual factors influence these patterns?
3. What are the implications for language evolution?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of digital syntax in Nigerian online communication, informing both theoretical models and practical educational strategies. Insights into platform-specific language use will help educators and policymakers adapt to evolving digital discourse trends (Ibrahim, 2024; Obi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to Facebook comments and WhatsApp chats by Nigerian users; excludes other platforms and offline interactions.
Definitions of terms
