Background of the study
TikTok has emerged as a dynamic platform that significantly influences phonological patterns in digital communication. In Nigeria, TikTok audio clips, characterized by lip-sync performances and voiceovers, provide a rich source of data on how users modify pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm. These modifications often result in distinctive phonetic variations that deviate from traditional speech patterns (Akinyemi, 2023). Users on TikTok employ creative vocal techniques to enhance their content’s appeal and express cultural identity. The platform’s emphasis on short, engaging audio content fosters rapid experimentation with sound, leading to innovative phonological forms that spread quickly among digital communities (Ibrahim, 2024). This study focuses on TikTok audio clips to examine how digital performance alters phonological patterns among Nigerian users, exploring factors such as cultural influence, audience interaction, and platform constraints (Obi, 2025). The research aims to contribute to theoretical models of digital phonetics and language evolution in the context of online media.
Statement of the problem
Despite the popularity of TikTok and its influence on speech, there is limited research on the specific phonological variations induced by TikTok audio clips among Nigerian users. Most studies have focused on textual or visual digital trends, neglecting the auditory dimension of online communication. This gap limits our understanding of how digital performance affects pronunciation and overall phonetic variation. As a result, educators and linguists lack comprehensive models to address the changes in phonological patterns emerging from digital media (Chinwe, 2023).
Objectives of the study
1. To analyze phonetic variations in Nigerian TikTok audio clips.
2. To compare these variations with traditional speech patterns.
3. To develop models for digital phonetic innovation.
Research questions
1. What phonological changes are evident in TikTok audio clips?
2. How do these changes compare to conventional pronunciation?
3. What factors drive these digital phonetic variations?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of TikTok audio clips on Nigerian phonological patterns, advancing our understanding of digital phonetics and language evolution. The findings will inform language education and help policymakers address modern communication trends (Akinyemi, 2023; Obi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing TikTok audio clips from Nigerian users, excluding other digital media and offline speech contexts.
Definitions of terms
