Background of the study

Hashtag activism has emerged as a powerful tool in digital communication, driving not only political mobilization but also linguistic change. In Nigeria, Twitter political movements leverage hashtags to encapsulate social and political demands, while simultaneously influencing morphosyntactic structures. These movements generate creative linguistic practices where traditional sentence structures and word formations are reconfigured to support rapid dissemination of messages (Adeniyi, 2023). Users often integrate political slogans with modified syntax, leading to the emergence of hybrid expressions that challenge conventional morphosyntax. This phenomenon reflects the broader interplay between digital activism and language evolution, as hashtag activism fosters innovative constructions that blend colloquial and formal elements (Ibrahim, 2024). By analyzing tweets associated with political movements, this study aims to explore how hashtag activism contributes to morphosyntactic variation in Nigerian digital discourse. The research examines factors such as audience engagement, cultural context, and digital affordances, offering insights into the mechanisms of language change catalyzed by political activism (Obi, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the prominence of hashtag activism in Nigerian political discourse, there is limited research on its impact on morphosyntactic structures. Existing studies have primarily focused on the political efficacy of hashtags without considering their linguistic ramifications. This gap hinders our understanding of how political movements on Twitter influence language by altering sentence structure and word formation (Chinwe, 2023). The absence of systematic analysis on hashtag-induced morphosyntactic changes poses challenges for linguists and policymakers who seek to understand and adapt to digital language evolution (Ibrahim, 2024). This study aims to address these shortcomings by examining the morphosyntactic impact of hashtag activism in Nigerian Twitter political movements.

Objectives of the study

1. To analyze morphosyntactic patterns in tweets related to hashtag activism.

2. To assess the influence of political hashtags on language structure.

3. To develop theoretical models explaining digital morphosyntactic change.

Research questions

1. How do political hashtags affect morphosyntactic constructions in tweets?

2. What patterns of morphosyntactic variation are observable?

3. How can these changes be theoretically modeled?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it examines the impact of hashtag activism on Nigerian morphosyntax within Twitter political movements. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and provide practical insights for policymakers and educators in adapting to language changes driven by digital activism (Adeniyi, 2023; Obi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian Twitter political movements, excluding other social media platforms and non political hashtags.

Definitions of terms

• Hashtag Activism: The use of hashtags to promote social or political change.

• Morphosyntax: The interaction of morphological and syntactic structures in language.

• Digital Activism: Political or social campaigning through digital platforms.
