Background of the study

Online communication platforms have transformed traditional syntactic norms, particularly evident in user generated content such as Facebook comments. In Nigeria, Facebook serves as a public forum where diverse linguistic practices converge, resulting in unique syntactic constructions that differ from formal language norms. Users often manipulate sentence structure, punctuation, and word order to convey emotion, humor, or emphasis in their comments. This syntactic creativity is a response to the informal, interactive nature of online discourse, where brevity and immediacy often lead to deviations from standard grammar (Ibrahim, 2023). By analyzing Facebook comments, this study aims to evaluate the syntactic variations that emerge in digital communication. The research will explore how Nigerian users employ creative syntax to adapt to the constraints of digital platforms while maintaining communicative effectiveness. Factors such as regional dialects, age, and social context are considered integral to understanding these syntactic shifts (Emeka, 2024). Ultimately, the study seeks to provide insights into how digital communication influences language structure and contributes to evolving syntactic norms in Nigeria (Obi, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the importance of online communication in shaping contemporary language, there is limited research focusing on syntactic variations in Nigerian Facebook comments. Existing literature often overlooks the structural aspects of digital discourse, concentrating primarily on lexical or stylistic innovations. This gap restricts our ability to understand how digital environments influence syntax and what implications these changes have for language standardization and education (Chinwe, 2023). Without a detailed examination of syntactic practices in Facebook comments, educators and linguists are left without critical data to inform language policy in the digital age. This study aims to fill this void by analyzing the syntax of Nigerian Facebook comments and comparing them with traditional syntactic norms (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

1. To analyze syntactic patterns in Nigerian Facebook comments.

2. To compare digital syntactic innovations with traditional norms.

3. To develop recommendations for integrating findings into language education.

Research questions

1. What are the common syntactic patterns in Nigerian Facebook comments?

2. How do these patterns deviate from conventional syntax?

3. What factors drive these syntactic innovations?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it evaluates online communication on Nigerian syntax through an analysis of Facebook comments. The findings will contribute to linguistic theory by illuminating digital syntactic evolution and informing language education strategies, thus supporting effective communication in the digital era (Emeka, 2024; Obi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing Facebook comments by Nigerian users, excluding other social media platforms and offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

• Syntax: The arrangement of words and phrases to create sentences.

• Digital Discourse: Communication that occurs on digital platforms.

• Facebook Comments: User-generated responses posted on Facebook
