Background of the study

Social media trends significantly influence linguistic structures, particularly syntax, in digital communication. On Twitter, hashtag based sentences have emerged as a novel syntactic form where traditional grammatical conventions are reinterpreted to suit the platform’s constraints and creative demands. In Nigeria, users often construct sentences that integrate hashtags as core elements, thereby challenging and reshaping conventional syntax (Ibrahim, 2023). These hashtag based constructions serve not only as communicative shortcuts but also as vehicles for expressing complex social and political ideas. The syntactic innovation seen in these digital artifacts highlights the dynamic interplay between language, technology, and culture. This study compares hashtag based sentences on Twitter with standard syntactic forms to identify the key factors driving these changes. By analyzing the structure and usage of such sentences, the research seeks to understand how social media trends lead to syntactic reconfigurations in Nigerian digital discourse (Emeka, 2024). The study ultimately contributes to theoretical advancements in understanding how digital environments shape syntactic practices in real time.

Statement of the problem

Despite the noticeable emergence of hashtag based sentences on Twitter, there is limited research on their syntactic implications in Nigerian digital discourse. Existing studies tend to focus on lexical innovations rather than structural changes, thereby neglecting the impact of social media trends on sentence construction. This gap in research impedes the development of comprehensive models that capture the syntactic evolution driven by digital trends. Educators and language theorists are challenged by a lack of empirical data on how hashtag integration alters syntactic norms, making it difficult to adapt language instruction and policy to these innovations (Obi, 2023). This study aims to bridge this gap by providing a comparative analysis of hashtag based syntax and its conventional counterparts.

Objectives of the study

1. To analyze the syntactic structure of hashtag based sentences on Twitter.

2. To compare these structures with standard syntactic forms.

3. To develop recommendations for incorporating findings into linguistic theory.

Research questions

1. What syntactic features characterize hashtag based sentences on Twitter?

2. How do these features differ from traditional sentence constructions?

3. What factors contribute to these syntactic innovations?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it examines the syntactic impact of social media trends through hashtag based sentences in Nigerian Twitter discourse. The research provides valuable insights into how digital communication reshapes grammatical norms and informs theoretical and practical applications in language education and policy. By highlighting the innovative use of syntax in digital contexts, the study advances our understanding of modern linguistic evolution (Afolabi, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing hashtag based sentences on Twitter and excludes other digital platforms and offline syntactic practices.

Definitions of terms

• Syntax: The rules and principles that govern sentence structure.

• Hashtag Based Sentences: Sentence constructions that incorporate hashtags as integral components.

• Social Media Trends: Popular patterns or practices emerging in digital communication.
