Background of the study
Social media platforms have increasingly become arenas for dynamic linguistic experimentation. In Nigeria, both Facebook and WhatsApp serve as significant communication channels where users negotiate and reshape syntactic structures. Recent digital discourse research highlights that the informal language used on these platforms frequently deviates from traditional syntactic norms (Adeola, 2023). This comparative study explores how Facebook’s public forum and WhatsApp’s private group settings foster distinct syntactic patterns among Nigerian users. The interactive nature of these platforms encourages users to adopt creative sentence constructions, often blending colloquial speech with standard grammatical rules. As users engage in discussions, they introduce modifications in clause structure, word order, and punctuation, thereby reflecting broader social and cultural influences on language. Such syntactic innovations are further driven by the need for brevity and expressive nuance in digital interactions (Chukwu, 2024). The comparative analysis aims to uncover similarities and differences in syntax variation between these platforms, offering insights into the evolving nature of Nigerian digital discourse. By examining real-time language practices, the study seeks to contribute to sociolinguistic theory and inform educational practices regarding the integration of digital language use. This investigation is timely, considering the rapid evolution of digital communication and its implications for language standardization and identity formation (Okafor, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the proliferation of digital communication, there is limited empirical research specifically comparing syntactic practices on Facebook and WhatsApp among Nigerian users. Current studies often treat social media discourse as a monolithic entity, neglecting the nuanced differences that distinct platforms may exhibit (Ibrahim, 2023). This gap impedes the understanding of how contextual factors such as privacy, audience, and platform design influence syntactic choices. Educators and language policymakers face challenges in addressing these evolving syntactic norms because traditional linguistic frameworks do not fully capture the creative adaptations observed online (Uche, 2024). Thus, a comparative study that systematically analyzes syntactic variations in Facebook and WhatsApp discourse is essential to provide deeper insights into digital language change and its broader implications for Nigerian sociolinguistics.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of syntactic variation in Nigerian digital discourse across Facebook and WhatsApp. The findings offer critical insights into the influence of platform dynamics on language structure, enhancing our understanding of digital language evolution. This research contributes to sociolinguistic theory and assists educators and policymakers in developing curricula that acknowledge contemporary linguistic practices. By bridging the gap between traditional syntax and modern digital communication, the study lays the groundwork for further exploration of language innovation in online environments (Adebayo, 2023; Eze, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining syntactic features in Nigerian digital discourse on Facebook and WhatsApp. It excludes other social media platforms and offline language interactions, focusing solely on syntactic variations within these two contexts.
