Background of the study

Online neologisms have become a defining feature of digital communication, particularly in contexts where informal language and rapid information exchange prevail. In Nigeria, the emergence of new words and expressions in digital spaces such as Facebook and Instagram is reshaping how language is used and understood. Users on these platforms often create and disseminate neologisms that capture contemporary cultural trends, humor, and social issues (Akinola, 2023). Comparative studies reveal that while both Facebook and Instagram foster linguistic creativity, the nature and frequency of neologisms can vary due to differences in platform design and user demographics (Babatunde, 2024). These new words not only enrich the language but also serve as indicators of social and cultural evolution, reflecting the dynamic interplay between technology and language. Researchers argue that the study of online neologisms is critical for understanding modern linguistic innovation and cultural adaptation (Oluwole, 2023). This research aims to investigate the creation, dissemination, and reception of neologisms across Facebook and Instagram, offering a comparative analysis that highlights both convergences and divergences in digital language practices (Nkemdilim, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the growing popularity of online neologisms in Nigerian digital communication, there is limited research comparing their usage across different social media platforms. Most existing studies focus on a single platform, thereby overlooking the nuanced differences in linguistic creativity between Facebook and Instagram (Chidera, 2023). This gap restricts our understanding of how platform-specific features influence the formation and propagation of new words and expressions. Furthermore, the rapid pace of neologism creation challenges traditional linguistic frameworks, necessitating a comparative approach to capture the full spectrum of digital language evolution (Amadi, 2024). This study seeks to address these issues by examining the characteristics and impacts of online neologisms on both platforms, thereby offering insights into contemporary digital language practices.

Objectives of the study

1. To investigate the creation of online neologisms on Facebook and Instagram.

2. To compare the frequency and nature of neologisms across the two platforms.

3. To assess the cultural and social implications of these neologisms.

Research questions

1. What types of neologisms are prevalent on Facebook and Instagram?

2. How do the platforms differ in terms of neologism creation and usage?

3. What are the broader social implications of online neologisms in Nigeria?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it compares the emergence and impact of online neologisms on Facebook and Instagram within Nigerian digital communication. By analyzing linguistic innovations on both platforms, the research provides a nuanced understanding of how new words reflect cultural and social shifts. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and assist educators and media analysts in adapting to rapid language changes. Furthermore, the study offers insights into the role of digital platforms in shaping contemporary language, thereby guiding future research and policy development (Ibrahim, 2023; Okoye, 2024). This research expands theoretical knowledge and applications.

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to examining online neologisms in Facebook and Instagram posts by Nigerian users. It focuses exclusively on digital communication and does not include offline linguistic practices or other social media platforms.

Definitions of terms

• Online Neologisms: Newly coined words or expressions that emerge in digital communication.

• Digital Communication: The exchange of information through electronic means, particularly social media.

• Comparative Study: A research approach that analyzes similarities and differences between two or more subjects.
