Background of the study

Effective public speaking is essential in political contexts, where clear articulation can influence public perception and decision-making. In Abuja, Nigerian politicians use public speeches as a medium to convey policy, build credibility, and mobilize support. This study evaluates the phonetic articulation of politicians in Abuja by analyzing features such as consonant clarity, vowel articulation, and intonation patterns. Precise phonetic delivery is critical for ensuring that political messages are both persuasive and understandable (Ogunleye, 2023). By examining recorded speeches and conducting acoustic analyses, the research aims to document the phonetic characteristics that contribute to effective public speaking. The study also investigates how regional accents, speech rate, and stress patterns affect the overall clarity of the message. In doing so, it addresses the interplay between traditional speech practices and modern communication demands in high-stakes political environments. The findings will offer insights into speech training and performance enhancement for political figures, contributing to more impactful public discourse (Afolabi, 2024; Musa, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the importance of clear articulation in political speeches, there is limited research on the phonetic performance of Nigerian politicians in Abuja. Variability in articulation and inconsistent speech patterns may undermine message clarity, affecting public perception and political accountability (Ogunleye, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

• To analyze phonetic articulation in political speeches.

• To assess the impact on message clarity and persuasion.

• To recommend improvements for speech training.

Research questions:

• What are the key phonetic features in Abuja political speeches?

• How do articulation variations affect audience comprehension?

• What strategies can improve public speaking performance?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a detailed evaluation of phonetic articulation in Nigerian public speaking, offering practical insights for enhancing political communication and public engagement (Musa, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study focuses solely on political speeches in Abuja and does not extend to other public speaking contexts or regions.

Definitions of terms:

1. Phonetic Articulation: The clarity and manner in which speech sounds are produced.

2. Public Speaking: Formal oral communication in a public setting.

3. Intonation: The variation of pitch in spoken language.
