Background of the study
Digital storytelling through vlogs has emerged as a transformative medium in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos where content creators blend visual media with innovative linguistic expression. Vlog narratives are characterized by dynamic syntactic constructions that deviate from traditional norms, reflecting the spontaneity and personal touch of digital discourse. In these narratives, vloggers frequently employ creative sentence structures, non-standard punctuation, and flexible word order to engage audiences and convey complex ideas in a conversational tone (Ibrahim, 2023). This study explores how digital storytelling influences Nigerian syntax by analyzing a corpus of vlog narratives from Lagos. It examines the emergence of new syntactic patterns driven by digital affordances such as editing, multimedia integration, and audience interaction. The research also considers the interplay between local dialect features and global communication trends, highlighting the adaptive nature of Nigerian English in online contexts. By scrutinizing these innovative structures, the study aims to reveal how digital storytelling not only reflects linguistic change but also actively shapes language evolution. The findings will offer insights into the role of digital media in creating hybrid syntactic forms that enhance expressive potential while challenging traditional grammatical frameworks (Afolabi, 2024; Nwachukwu, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the rapid proliferation of vlogs as a storytelling medium, there is scant empirical research on how digital storytelling affects syntactic structures in Nigerian English. Variations in sentence construction observed in vlog narratives may lead to ambiguity or misinterpretation in digital communication. This lack of systematic analysis creates a research gap, limiting our understanding of the impact of digital media on language evolution and inhibiting the development of guidelines for effective digital discourse (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
• To document innovative syntactic patterns in Lagos vlog narratives.
• To analyze the influence of digital storytelling on syntactic variability.
• To propose recommendations for incorporating emerging syntactic trends into language education.
Research questions:
• What new syntactic structures are prevalent in Lagos vlog narratives?
• How do these structures differ from traditional Nigerian English syntax?
• What are the implications for digital literacy and language teaching?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of digital storytelling on Nigerian syntax, offering vital insights into language evolution in digital contexts. The findings will benefit educators, media practitioners, and linguists by informing strategies to integrate emerging syntactic trends into curricula and digital communication practices (Nwachukwu, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses solely on vlog narratives from Lagos and does not extend to other digital storytelling platforms or regions.
Definitions of terms:
1. Digital Storytelling: The practice of using digital media to tell personal or cultural narratives.
2. Syntax: The rules governing sentence structure.
3. Vlog Narratives: Video blog entries that combine visual and verbal storytelling.
