Background of the study

Multilingual interactions in Nigeria often lead to phonetic convergence, a phenomenon where speakers adjust their pronunciation to achieve mutual intelligibility. In the bustling markets of Ibadan, where diverse linguistic communities meet, phonetic convergence plays a vital role in facilitating communication. This study investigates how market interactions drive the convergence of phonetic features among speakers of different languages. It examines aspects such as vowel quality, consonant articulation, and intonation patterns, highlighting how individuals modify their speech to accommodate others (Ojo, 2023; Babatunde, 2024). By recording and analyzing natural conversations in market settings, the research aims to document patterns of phonetic adaptation. Additionally, the study considers the sociolinguistic factors—such as ethnicity, age, and social status—that influence convergence. Understanding these dynamics provides insights into language contact phenomena and the mechanisms that promote linguistic harmony in multilingual environments. The findings are expected to inform language policy and communication strategies in diverse urban settings.

Statement of the problem

Although phonetic convergence is observable in multilingual markets, there is limited empirical research on how such processes unfold in Ibadan. The lack of systematic documentation of convergence patterns hinders our ability to understand its effects on communication clarity and social cohesion (Ojo, 2023). This research gap restricts the development of linguistic models that capture the dynamic nature of language contact in urban markets.

Objectives of the study:

• To document phonetic convergence patterns in Ibadan markets.

• To analyze sociolinguistic factors influencing convergence.

• To propose communication strategies for multilingual settings.

Research questions:

• What phonetic changes occur during market interactions?

• How do social factors affect convergence?

• What implications do these changes have for urban communication?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of phonetic convergence in Nigerian market interactions, offering insights for linguists and urban planners. The findings will aid in developing communication policies that promote social cohesion in multilingual settings (Babatunde, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is limited to market interactions in Ibadan and does not extend to other urban environments or formal settings.

Definitions of terms:

• Phonetic Convergence: The process by which speakers adjust pronunciation.

• Multilingual Communities: Groups where multiple languages coexist.

• Market Interactions: Conversational exchanges in commercial settings.
