Background of the study

Nigerian English, as a variety shaped by local influences, exhibits significant variation due to regional accents. In broadcast media, particularly in Lagos and Abuja, the diversity of regional accents impacts both the clarity and perceived credibility of news delivery. This study investigates how accent variation influences communication effectiveness in Nigerian English broadcasts by analyzing audio samples from these two major cities. Regional phonetic features—such as vowel quality, consonant articulation, and intonation patterns—vary notably between Lagos and Abuja, contributing to distinct listener perceptions (Ogunleye, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). The research employs acoustic analysis and audience surveys to assess whether these regional differences enhance or impede message comprehension. Additionally, the study examines how broadcasters adapt their speech to balance authenticity with clarity in a multicultural audience. Understanding these dynamics is critical for developing targeted training programs and ensuring that broadcast language remains accessible to all segments of society.

Statement of the problem

Despite the vital role of regional accents in shaping Nigerian English broadcasts, limited research has explored their impact on communication in Lagos and Abuja. Variations in pronunciation and intonation may lead to differences in audience comprehension and perception, yet broadcasters receive minimal guidance on managing accent diversity (Ogunleye, 2023). This gap in empirical research hinders the development of communication strategies that address the challenges of regional linguistic diversity, affecting both message clarity and audience engagement.

Objectives of the study:

• To document regional accent features in Lagos and Abuja broadcasts.

• To assess their impact on listener comprehension.

• To recommend strategies for optimizing broadcast language.

Research questions:

• What are the distinguishing features of regional accents in Lagos and Abuja?

• How do these features affect audience understanding?

• What modifications can enhance broadcast clarity?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it sheds light on the influence of regional accents on Nigerian English in broadcast media, providing insights for broadcasters and language trainers. The findings will help in developing strategies to standardize pronunciation for improved communication across diverse audiences (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is limited to analyzing regional accents in broadcasts from Lagos and Abuja and does not consider other media or regions.

Definitions of terms:

• Regional Accents: Distinctive pronunciation patterns associated with specific geographic areas.

• Nigerian English: The localized variety of English spoken in Nigeria.

• Broadcasts: Media transmissions that deliver news and information to the public.
