Background of the Study
Nigerian youth communication has been transformed by the advent of social media, where pragmatic devices such as emoticons, hashtags, and code-switching are employed to negotiate meaning and build identity. This study compares the use of pragmatic devices in social media interactions among Nigerian youth across various platforms. Youth often adopt creative strategies to express politeness, humor, and solidarity in informal online conversations (Uche, 2023). By examining posts, comments, and multimedia exchanges, the research seeks to identify the most prevalent pragmatic devices and assess how they facilitate effective communication in digital environments. The study also considers the impact of socio-cultural factors on the selection and adaptation of these devices. Through a comparative approach, it aims to determine whether certain platforms foster more dynamic pragmatic practices than others and how these practices influence language evolution and social cohesion (Adeleke, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although pragmatic devices are central to online communication among Nigerian youth, there is limited comparative research on how these devices are used across different social media platforms. Existing studies often focus on individual devices or platforms without providing an integrated view of pragmatic practices in youth interactions (Uche, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how digital contexts shape language use and social identity. Without systematic analysis, the role of pragmatic devices in facilitating effective communication and maintaining cultural continuity remains unclear. This study seeks to fill this gap by conducting a comparative analysis of pragmatic devices in Nigerian youth social media interactions (Adeleke, 2024).
