Background of the Study
Cultural exchanges play a pivotal role in shaping phonetic features across languages. In Nigeria, the Yoruba language—rich in tonal complexity and distinctive pronunciation patterns—has increasingly influenced contemporary music genres. This study examines how Yoruba phonetic features, such as vowel quality, tone, and intonation, are integrated into modern musical expressions. Through cultural exchanges facilitated by global media and live performance collaborations, traditional Yoruba sound patterns merge with contemporary musical styles to create hybrid vocal aesthetics (Afolabi, 2023). Recordings of popular songs and interviews with musicians will be analyzed using acoustic phonetic methods to capture subtle articulatory changes. The research investigates how these cultural influences not only preserve indigenous phonetics but also foster innovation in vocal delivery. This synthesis of tradition and modernity offers insights into the dynamic nature of phonetic adaptation and its role in maintaining cultural identity within Nigeria’s evolving music scene (Okeke, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Although Yoruba phonetics are central to Nigeria’s musical heritage, limited research exists on their influence in contemporary music genres. Most studies focus on traditional settings without addressing how cultural exchanges in the modern music industry transform phonetic features (Afolabi, 2023). This gap restricts our understanding of the impact of cross-cultural musical collaborations on pronunciation and vocal style. Without systematic phonetic analysis, the potential of cultural exchange to innovate or erode traditional sound patterns remains unclear. This study seeks to fill that gap by exploring how Yoruba phonetics are adapted in contemporary musical expressions, thereby illuminating the role of cultural influence in phonetic evolution (Okeke, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To document Yoruba phonetic features present in contemporary music.
  • To analyze the influence of cultural exchange on vocal articulation.
  • To evaluate the impact on traditional phonetic identity.

Research Questions

  • How are Yoruba phonetic features manifested in contemporary music?
  • What role does cultural exchange play in altering vocal delivery?
  • What are the implications for the preservation of indigenous phonetics?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of cultural exchange and phonetics in Nigerian contemporary music. The insights will inform musicologists, cultural scholars, and language preservation advocates on how traditional phonetic elements are maintained or transformed through modern artistic practices (Afolabi, 2023; Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of Yoruba phonetic influence in contemporary Nigerian music.

Definitions of Terms

  • Phonetics: The study of speech sounds and their production.
  • Cultural Exchange: The sharing and merging of cultural elements between communities.
  • Contemporary Music: Modern musical genres influenced by traditional and global styles.
